Code Relief Launches AutoVAULT™ 

A Tape Vaulting and Disaster Recovery add-on for Tivoli Storage Manager™ with support for Backup Sets 

Reading, PA- September 1, 2000 Code Relief LLC, a premier provider of storage management software applications, today launched its tape vaulting and disaster recovery solution for Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM, formerly IBM’s ADSM). Fulfilling a critical need not addressed in the marketplace, AutoVAULT provides an innovative, easy-to-implement solution to equip companies to quickly recover from a data disaster and avoid costly technician time for the daily management of media vaulting.  AutoVAULT also provides support for backup-set vaulting, an important feature that is not included in any of the TSM product line.

To be fully covered in the event of a disaster, companies need both to ensure that their media is where it should be, and to have the ability to recover their TSM server quickly.  Automation of these important functions is not included in the base TSM application.  Vice President of Product Development, Stephen C. Hnath states, “Without AutoVAULT, a simple media or server failure can easily turn into a permanent data loss.  By automating daily tape vaulting and disaster planning, AutoVAULT greatly reduces the possibility of human error, protecting corporate data at a much higher level.”

Without AutoVAULT, companies need to use time consuming, error-prone, manual methods to identify media to vault off-site and to return on-site at the proper time.  In the event of a disaster or something as simple as a TSM server crashing, companies not using AutoVAULT would have to manually restore their TSM servers.  They would need to know which media to load, which commands to run, and in precisely what order.  This manual server recovery can cause extensive down time and data loss.  In contrast, AutoVAULT, used with TSM or ADSM, automates recovery making companies ready to recover quickly from any data loss.

Backup Set Media Vaulting - unique to AutoVAULT

TSM is now able to create an independent copy of a client's active data from existing server storage pools onto removable media.  This is called a backup set.  One use of a backup set is to create a point-in-time client backup for long term retention without moving data over the network.  This Instant Archive can replace annual data archives that are often run over the network to satisfy a data retention requirement.  The Tivoli product line does not include a mechanism to vault the backup set media, a feature unique to AutoVAULT.

Today’s AutoVAULT release runs under Windows™ NT/2000™ and manages/restores TSM servers both on IBM’s AIX™ and Windows NT/2000™ operating systems.
